Cloyd Dean Monroe, 55, died at 1:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He had retired as a petty officer from the U.S. Navy after 22 years and had been employed in the maintenance department at Mercantile Bank in Alton.

Born Feb. 12, 1942, in Alton, he was the son of the late Homer Monroe and Alfreda

(Kennedy) Monroe of East Alton.

He married Joy Sons Sept. 1, 1964, in Edwardsville. She survives. He is also survived by two

sons, Fred Monroe of East Alton and Kevin Monroe of Alton; two daughters, Judy Hatcher and Flora Gates, both of Alton; eight grandchildren, William Champlin, Anthony Champlin, Samantha Gates,

Amanda Gates, Brittany Monroe, Jason Monroe, Jesse Monroe, Harley Monroe; four brothers, Phillip Monroe of Alton, Ralph Monroe of East Alton, Billy Monroe of Dow and Donnie Monroe of Wood River; and two sisters, Emily Blagg of Gainesville, Fla., and Marena Wells of East Alton.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Preston Monroe.

Visitation was at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, where cremation followed.
